Board Member Keep VIRCS on track. Directors ensure that VIRCS fulfills its mission and realizes its opportunities and obligations for its services and programs.



Settlement

Support newcomers' involvement in our community! VIRCS' Aaron Gordon settlement programs are designed to assist individuals and families in meeting the many new challenges they face when adapting to our culture. There are countless ways to support the services provided by the Aaron Gordon Settlement Program. Become a youth activity leader, homework tutor or a translator

Position Description
Translator Translators are needed in many different languages on an on-call basis. Share your knowledge of Shona, Italian, Punjabi, Pushto, Persian, Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, Sihnalesi, Hindi, Tamil, Sihnalesi, Amharic, Eritrean, Tigriyma, Ethiopia, Spanish, Farsi, Turkish, Persian, Turkish, Swahili...and more.
Homework Tutor Assist ESL secondary students with subjects such as social studies, math, english, science. Tutors help students with their homework.
Youth Program Assistant Design, plan, create and implement innovative ideas and outings for a youth program for ages 12-18 for one evening a week.
Settlement Assistant Assist the staff in everyday tasks that help our clients to understand many of our canadian culture daily activities. Much enjoy meeting people from around the world and to be available for a one year commitment of time.
Settlement Supporter Provide support and companionship to families, by accompanying them to appointments, and providing healthy strategies for them to integration into Canadian culture.
Receptionist Greeting people with a smile. Good listening skills.



ESL Department

Gain ESL teaching experience! ESL classes are offered in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The curriculum encompasses conversation, life skills in Canada, basic law and health issues, field trips and social gatherings. There are a variety of ESL volunteer positions: Home Tutor, ESL Class Assistant, and ESL Teacher. Volunteers are placed according to their previous experience and their interest. Beginner and intermediate ESL classes are taught at the Centre, Monday through Thursday, during the day. ESL Volunteer Home Tutors are matched with students unable to attend regular ESL classes or who have special learning needs.

Position Description
ESL Home Tutor Tutor ESL at immigrants' home or elsewhere as agreed. Give personalized support to a newcomer by offering encouragement through one-on-one tutoring. Instruction is tailored to individual student requirements.
One-on-One ESL Tutor Tutor ESL students in classroom setting. Bring a smile and become a friendly face.
ESL Teacher Assistant Full time teaches, admin, assistant - daily office tasks
ESL Class Assistant elp assist the teacher with a multicultural, multi level classroom of students. Work one-on-one or with small group - Monday-Thursday mornings and afternoons two to ten hours a week.



VIRCS day-by-day

Help make people feel good about their life in Canada! Various on going projects. Participate one-on-one or in groups activities.Volunteering is a great opportunity to gain work knowledge or sharpen your skills. Accepting volunteer professionals

Position Description
Receptionist Greet all in-coming clients and direct them to the appropriate area. Informing staff when walk-in clients/appointments have arrived. Taking messages, answering a multi-line phone system and redirecting calls.. Some general office duties.
Life Skills Facilitator Facilitate Life Skills workshops (e.g. Stress Management, Time Management, etc.)
Administrative Assistant Gain experience! Learn the volunteer programs. Organize and plan activities around special events. Modify and copy instructional materials, prepare invitations for events, training materials, input data from forms and make telephone calls.
Office Assistant Improve your skills with office tasks, including word processing, photocopying; materials, internet research, filing projects and emails.
Publications Get creative. Use your design skills to create brochures, newsletters or other publications.
Grant Researcher Explore, research and write up grant proposals.. Must have knowledge in this area and excellent writing skills.
Fundraising Assistant Design a campaign component with a plan to reach our objectives and goals.
Communications Assistant Help spread the word to groups and businesses informing them of VIRCS programs.
Poster Distributor Distribute posters in the community to promote VIRCS events.
Visual Display Create colourful and informative displays for information fairs and special events. Apply
Assistant Volunteer Coordinator Encourage newcomers to become involved in volunteering. Training assist as a volunteer coordinator by providing extra support for festival volunteers activities. Five hours a week for 12 weeks.
Workshop Assistant Attend the workshop with the room preparation , handing out information, signing up guests, and general tasks.
Special Project Assistant Join the fun! This is an opportunity to understand how to run a special event. Assist the Coordinator of Volunteers with one of VIRCS ongoing events or projects.
Committee Member Task-orientated people can be involved in one of VIRCS ongoing committees for our events.
Photographer Creative ideas for pictures to represent VIRCS volunteers, festival and special events newsletters, emails, and the website.
Tax Preparation Prepare tax returns - trained for VIRCS' clients. Seasonly.
Guest Presenter/Instructor Workshop Share your special skills and talents with our volunteers, clients or staff. Teach a craft, present educational information, or facilitate a discussion on topics of interest to immigrant communities. Open to creative ways and new topics.
Web Designer Help with the weekly update of information
Computer Assistant Teach beginners in using a computer and its programs. Assist our technician with the daily activities and tasks troubleshooting computer clinches.
Appreciation Organizer Show appreciation to our volunteers by tasks that recognize birthdays, organize socials, ensure volunteers are informed about our events, assist with an Annual Appreciation Event, hand out cards and gifts of thanks.
Cultural Bridging Host Be a host/buddy and be matched up with a newcomer based on things you have in common. Meet with them once a week and support them as they adjust to their new life by being their friend. We are always looking for new hosts for the Be-Friends Program (19-30 yrs old) and parents for the Family Friendship Program.

    • Children's Winter around the World Celebration - Looking for businesses to contribute to helping new immigrant families at Christmas with food and a Santa.

  • Employer- supported Volunteerism
    Employer-supported Volunteerism is a great way to contribute to VIRCS' Special Events. Involving employees in our community volunteer program sends a message that businesses value the community we live in. Employers can donate the time and talents of their employees to help this worthy cause and promote their organizations / businesses at the same time (for example: by wearing company T-Shirts).
  • Professional Volunteers: Share your professional skills and knowledge.Doctors, Dentist, Tax Preparers, Translators are all accept to consider offering your services to our clients.
  • HBC Rewards Community Card - Every time you spend a dollar at 'Zellers' or' The Bay' you can support VIRCS by donating your 'reward points' to the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society. Apply for your HBC Rewards card at VIRCS.
